But Tantalus was not just a symbol of punishment. He became a symbol of human striving. Each of us strives for something unattainable. We long for what seems impossible, and this process of longing is our life. It is not merely a struggle with desire; it is our eternal goal, even if it always remains just out of reach.
Sitting in
his eternal torment, Tantalus pondered his punishment. He realized that all the
fruits and water were symbols of himself. He always wanted something, but could
never attain it. He could never enjoy it, just as most people long for ideals
that never become reality.
But instead
of despairing, Tantalus accepted his fate with unusual humor. He reconciled
with the fact that his thirst and hunger were a part of his existence. The
striving for the impossible became his life.
“Maybe
this is the point, after all, — he reflected. — In the endless striving. Maybe
it's not about reaching the unattainable, but about what keeps us striving. And
if I can never reach these fruits, it’s only because the process of reaching
them is more important than the result.”
And after
writing down this thought, he added another:
“So
maybe this myth isn’t about punishment, but about always striving for what
seems impossible?”
Tantalus
looked at his hand, stretched toward the fruit, and smiled. This smile was not
one of despair. It was a smile of understanding that the most important thing
is not what you achieve, but how you perceive your striving.
